US Youth Soccer Announces Updated Age Group Formation Decision

Beginning with the Fall 2026–Spring 2027 season, US Youth Soccer, AYSO, and US Club Soccer will implement a new age group formation cycle running from August 1 to July 31. This change aims to better align players with their school-grade peers, foster a more inclusive environment, and support increased participation in youth soccer. The new cycle will apply to all US Youth Soccer leagues and major competitions, including the National Championships, Presidents Cup, and National League.

This upcoming adjustment marks a significant shift from the birth-year system (January-December) that U.S. Soccer adopted in 2016. The 2016 change was intended to align American soccer with international FIFA standards, promoting consistency in player development and national team selection. However, it led to challenges such as team disruptions, players being separated from long-time teammates, and a more pronounced “relative age effect” where older players within a birth year often had a developmental advantage.

After receiving extensive feedback from players, parents, and coaches, U.S. Soccer has decided to revert to a school-year-based age group system. This return is expected to bring several benefits, including greater cohesion among peers by allowing players to stay with their school classmates, smoother development pathways for players who may have been “aged up” prematurely, and increased player retention due to reduced team disruptions.

While the long-term goal is to bring stability to the youth soccer system by aligning it with school-aged progression, clubs anticipate some short-term challenges. These include the need for team and roster adjustments, which may involve players switching teams and coaches adapting training plans, and potential temporary disruptions in player development as teams reorganize. Despite these immediate hurdles, the overall sentiment is that the long-term benefits of this change will outweigh the short-term disruptions, ultimately enhancing the youth soccer experience for families nationwide.

**Pelham Soccer Club to Align Age Groups with New Hampshire School Cutoff Dates**

After many months of internal discussions, along with valuable feedback from our families, Pelham Soccer Club has decided to align our team age group formations with New Hampshire school birth date cutoffs beginning with the Fall 2026–Spring 2027 season. New Hampshire schools utilize an October 1 – September 30– cutoff date, and this adjustment generally aligns with the updated policy adopted by US Youth Soccer, AYSO, and US Club Soccer, which will transition to an August 1–July 31 seasonal age grouping cycle. By grouping players more closely with their school-grade peers, we believe this change will strengthen team continuity, enhance the overall player experience, and support the long-term growth and participation of our players, families, and broader soccer community.
